Know of a child entering Kindergarten who would benefit from an extra supportive, intimate and nurturing camp where he/she will be able to relax and have fun and make new friends?
Well, we’re on a mission to provide kids with the extra support and skills so summer camp can be fun and filled with like-minded playmates who ‘get it’.
MRC is offering Marin Therapeutic Skills-based Friendship camps, what we're fondly referring to as "Worry Less, Relax More" for kids who have extra challenges due to anxiety, fear, worry or 'being sensitive'. We welcome new kids as well as our current and previous MRC clients. Our professional staff are psychotherapists who specialize in childhood anxiety and social-emotional learning and while this is not considered ‘therapy’ per se, the camp has high therapeutic value in that our curriculum is based on evidence based-approaches, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness (but it feels like camp to the campers and the therapist guides get camp-y too).
In addition, we inform every interaction and lesson with our expertise in attachment and development because we recognize that in order for anxiety-prone or sensitive kids to thrive, the grown-ups in charge need to know how to create and maintain a specialized-level of security and individualized attention. Often these kids struggle even with the most experienced camp counselors, so we’re devoted to providing camps run by trained psychotherapists. We also borrow from Montessori principles by designing activities that empower campers to be able to work independently when they need a break from the group. We ‘get it’ that some kids love making and playing with new friends, but sometimes part of managing it all is being able to retreat and regroup independently too.
Marin “Worry Less, Relax More” summer camp includes Art/Crafts, Science, Games, Movement/Yoga and ‘fill your tool kit’ (anxiety management tools that young kids can use to manage anxiety in all settings). These Camps are based on our immersive ‘After-school Clubs’ and Weekend Workshops for young kids.
Common things kids say about us "Cynthia is nice and fun", "Dr. Julie helps me with my worries", "my scared feelings get better" and "I get to do fun things that help my brain".
We designed the Camp to be experienced each day and we offer multi-day discount packages. Some kiddos will want to come for one day/week, others will want to come 3-days/week, depending on their needs. Make, learn, and grow at our Corte Madera location as well as off-site locations where our camp day is based around a gentle hike and nature day! This helps to optimize the results of the camp so parents can reinforce the anxiety management skills at home. parent education classes are free so long as you RSVP a FULL WEEK in advance. Any sign ups within a week of the class will be charged $25. Also, if you sign up and realize later that you will not be able to attend-- please let us know. No-shows will be charged $25.
*To optimize your student’s experience and value, an intake session as part of registration prior to enrollment and includes a custom set of recommendations. This intake also applies to future registrations in the same year, i.e. if the camper chooses to join one of our Clubs or Workshops (cost: Therapist’s typical rate of $150 - $220/50-minute session).
*If you suspect a reluctant camper and you’re not sure you’ll be able to convince them to go, we still encourage an intake session so we can inform you of options for how to maneuver their resistance and help them soften into more consideration and receptivity toward one of our summer camps or future Clubs or Workshops, especially if you suspect that their participation seems valuable to you as their parent.
