Confidentiality
Your (your child's) discussions with a Psychologist are
confidential - this means discussions with my client(s) are
protected by law. I may not share confidential information to
anyone about my client without his/her (or gaurdian's) consent. I
must also maintain records in such a way that protects your (your
child's) confidentiality.
There are situations in which I am legally required to break
confidentiality and share some information. These include the
following circumstances:
- If I believe the client is
in danger of harming him/herself or another person
- If I suspect abuse or
neglect of a child, older adult (age 65 or older), or dependent
adult
- If an adult client is unable
to provide basic care for him/herself
- If I am court-ordered to
release information as part of a legal proceeding
In the event that one of the
above limits of confidentiality arises, it is the responsibility of
the Psychologist to continue to respect the information that the
client shares. Therefore, if a limit of confidentiality should be
necessary, I will be mindful to only share information that is
required by the law and ethics of my profession.
